5/24/2023 0 Comments The House at Sunset by Norah LoftsNorah Lofts' work set in East Anglia in the 1930s and 1940s shows great concern with the very poor in society and their inability to change their conditions. Her creation of this fictitious area of England is reminiscent of Thomas Hardy's creation of "Wessex" and her use of recurring characters such that the protagonist of one novel appears as a secondary character in others is even more reminiscent of William Faulkner's work set in "Yoknapatawpha County," Mississippi. Most of her historical novels fall into two general categories: biographical novels about queens, among them Anne Boleyn, Isabella of Castile, and Catherine of Aragon and novels set in East Anglia centered around the fictitious town of Baildon (patterned largely on Bury St. However, the murders still show characteristic Norah Lofts elements. Norah Lofts chose to release her murder-mystery novels under the pen name Peter Curtis because she did not want the readers of her historic fiction to pick up a murder-mystery novel and expect classic Norah Lofts historical fiction. She also published using the pseudonyms Juliet Astley and Peter Curtis. Lofts was born in Shipdham, Norfolk in England. Many of her novels, including her Suffolk Trilogy, follow the history of a specific house and the residents that lived in it. She wrote over fifty books specialising in historical fiction, but she also wrote non-fiction and short stories. Norah Ethel Robinson Lofts Jorisch (27 August 1904–10 September 1983) was a 20th century best-selling British author.

5/24/2023 0 Comments Bite & Release by Cory CyrYou may notice that bug bites pick up in the summer, when you’re outside more often and exposing more skin, but they can occur any time of year-especially if you happen to be preyed upon inside of your home. It’s possible you could be having a severe allergic reaction, suffering from an insect-borne disease, or experiencing an infection. Mild itchiness and pain are normal reactions to insect bites and stings, but if you experience anything more severe than these, including shortness of breath and swelling away from the original site, you should contact a doctor or seek medical attention immediately. Everyone’s immune system reacts to bug bites and stings differently, producing unique symptoms in each victim, from swelling to itching to pain. In fact, experts say that it’s hard to positively identify the offending insect unless you actually catch it in the act. Unfortunately, experience shows us that almost all bug bites look strikingly similar. Have a nasty bite you can’t attribute to a specific house bug or outdoor pest? We’re sharing bug bite pictures to help you properly identify the offender, and how to best treat the wound. And often, you haven’t the slightest clue which critter could have been the culprit. Some ache, some beg to be scratched, and the worst of the bunch do both. Whether you first notice a sharp pinch, a nagging itch, or a painful sting, discovering a brand-new bug bite-sometimes instantly, but often only days later-is no fun. 5/24/2023 0 Comments Archie volume 1The latest volume of the biggest Archie graphic novels ever, … WebArchie 1000 Page Comics Glory - Archie Superstars This series is the #1 value in color children's books today. But they come to understand that this misery is the unfortunate cost of utopia, believing it justifies the happiness of the many. Their natural reaction, of course, is one of shock and disgust. Indeed, many citizens – including children – do visit the suffering child. The citizens of Omelas can visit the room where this child is locked away and bear witness to its tortured, isolated existence. The precise reasons for this setup are not explained, but that is somewhat irrelevant what matters is the philosophical and ethical implications of the thought experiment: does the extreme happiness of an entire city justify the extreme suffering of a single being, which is necessary to maintain that happiness? If the child were granted freedom and relief from its suffering, the prosperity of Omelas would wither away. This particular short story (which you can read here) describes the utopian city of Omelas, whose idyllic nature depends on the continual imprisonment, torture, suffering, and dehumanisation of a single child. Le Guin, originally published in 1973 and then re-republished in The Wind’s Twelve Quarters (1975), a collection of Le Guin’s short stories. The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas is a philosophical short story by the sci-fi writer Ursula K. An illustrated map of the city of Omelas, created by the artist Andrew DeGraff One reviewer went so far as to recommend the book to English-speaking Germans to clear up the muddy phrases of Gyorgy Lukács and Ernst Bloch, claiming that Jameson presented a much more articulate version of their ideas! There is no better demonstration of the recognition effected upon the Marxist corpus by Jameson's intellectual clarity than the conclusion to Aesthetics and Politics (1980), in which the hostility between Lukács and Bloch is transformed into two sides of the same politics. Marxism and Form stands as a seminal beginning to Jameson's utopian project, introducing the work of untranslated German writers, including Walter Benjamin and Herbert Marcuse, to a generation of Anglophonic scholars. To trace the line of utopian ideas in their works is to be seduced by Jameson's own project, which has, since Marxism and Form (1971), mapped the utopian continuities that exist between an assortment of Marxist writers. It is most tempting to think of Fredric Jameson's Archaeologies of the Future (2005) in utopian terms, as a contribution to the history of utopian philosophy represented by Theodor Adorno, Louis Marin and Herbert Marcuse, if not Hegel, Marx and Jameson himself. This disruption brought to light questions that many people found themselves asking, such as: Why do we view work the way that we do? Why do we attach moral values to those who work “well,” for example, working hard or often? Why must one work even if it is at the cost of one’s health or safety? Further, what role does work play in our self-identity? These questions all point to a work ethic, one that has existed in the underpinnings of our society for generations and that shows no sign of leaving. Our main task in a day was no longer occupying the time that it previously had, nor did it look the same. The changes brought about by COVID-19 left many people jobless, working from home, or working significantly fewer hours. 5/24/2023 0 Comments Crazy For Alice by Alex DunnThe two-week online event runs from Oct.31 through Nov.
